Book Review – The Girl Next Door – Phoebe Morgan

Genre: Thriller/ Suspense

Swathi’s Rating: 4.5/5

Phoebe Morgan is one author I have always wanted to try, because her first book The Doll House was so fantastic and I never wanted to miss reading her next. The Girl Next Door is a thriller you would get sucked into right from the first page and could finish in a single sitting. Yes, its a domestic thriller and no, it’s nothing you would expect at all. let’s start with the plot of the book!

Plot:

One little lie just became deadly…

Perfect mother. Perfect wife. Jane Goodwin has spent years building her picture-perfect life in the quiet village of Ashdon. So when sixteen-year-old Clare Edwards is found murdered in Sorrow’s Meadow, Jane knows she must first protect her family.

Swathi’s Review:

Set in the sleepy town of Ashdon, the residents know each other’s lives and businesses. They also maintain a facade for the town to see, while on the inside it’s something entirely different. Not uncommon in a small town but definitely intriguing.

All is well until a teenage girl is found dead in the town and it looks like a murder. Obviously, parents are the prime suspects but the incident has also shocked the entire town. Next door neighbour, Jane Goodwin lives the perfect life – she is the mother of two beautiful kids and the wife of the town’s handsome doctor. She is a renowned member of the book club and the other ladies of the town can’t be more jealous of her.

The news of her neighbour’s daughter Clare’s death is so close to home and she must do everything to protect her kids and family. Clare, a sweet 16 year old girl has her own secrets, hidden from her dysfunctional family and the outer world. All these tangled lies and secrets buried deep inside, will the police be able to bring justice to the girl’s death? You will have to read to know!!

We get to read some chapters from Jane Goodwin and Clare’s POV and the other chapters tell us the improvement in the police investigation. This ensures the pace of the book and keeps the reader hooked from cover to cover. The actual ‘wow’ factor is the way Phoebe has decided to write the climax for her book.

“Will justice be served or not?” is the question of the decade and I was in awe with the way Phoebe carried out the suspense throughout the book. Lies, betrayal, secrets, heart break, anger management are all dealt brilliantly in this psychological thriller with so much twists and unexpected turns. If you are a lover of thrillers, you must not miss Phoebe’s books!

Many thanks to HQ Stories for my copy of the book. All opinions are mine.
