Author Interview – Darek Black – Date with My Boss’s Daughter

Today, Derek Black is with me on the Blog as he talks about his new romantic book – Date with My Boss’ Daughter! Now, how spicy does that sound? Darek loves to write, whether it’s books, poetry, blogs. “Date with My Boss’s Daughter” is his first published book. Currently, he’s working on
releasing his second book and completing the final touches of his third. In his words, “When I’m not writing, I binge on books, articles, Netflix, and sports.”

SOS: Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written. 

DB: I want to first say that I am grateful to be interviewed by you. I enjoy your website. I have written 3 books, but this is my first published book.

Thank you Derek, it’s a pleasure to have you here as well. Congratulations on your new book! 🙂

SOS: Where were you raised? Where do you live now? Do you have any pets? 

DB: I was raised in Boston, but lived in NYC for almost half my life. I moved to Atlanta earlier this year. I have two cats that are always desperately vying for attention.

Ooh, Cats! Wonder what you’ve named them! 

SOS: What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?

DB: My book is titled “Date with My Boss’s Daughter.” I thought about how there are so many instances where business owners have a family member working at their company. I felt that it would be interesting to write about an employee going out on a date with the daughter of the company owner, such high stakes involved.

Well, that’s some interesting concept for a Novel I must say!

SOS: What genres do you write on? Is there a particular genre you want to try writing in the future?

DB: I prefer to write romance, suspense, thrillers, and mystery. I enjoy mixing genres. I feel that “Date with My Boss’s Daughter” is primarily in the romance genre, but has elements of comedy and suspense. One day, I want to try writing a fantasy novel.

SOS: What do you think will be the initial thoughts of your readers while reading your book?

DB: I think initially readers will find the book to be very entertaining.

It is entertaining, indeed!

SOS: Tell us about your writing process. Do you follow a unique way for writing Fiction?

DB: Once I come up with a story and have an idea of the conclusion, I like to freely write the first draft, without care for grammar or misspellings. My focus is to get all of my ideas down on paper. I want to make sure that I don’t forget anything. I like to pretty much try anything when I’m writing the first draft.
The goal is to see where the story takes me. After I complete the first draft, I like to read it over multiple times. I do intensive editing, taking out pieces that I feel do not enhance the story.

SOS: Who are your favorite authors? What is your favorite genre to read?

DB: My favorites are Stephen King, Peter Abrahams, and George Orwell. My favorite genre to read is suspense.

That makes two of us!

SOS: Describe your ideal writing spot. When you’re writing what’s your drink and snack of choice?

DB: I like to write in my office. I prefer as much silence as possible, with no distractions. But I do get distracted by hunger, so I keep a bowl of oatmeal in front of me. Also, I always want to have my water bottle near me.

Hmm, trying to keep a balanced diet, are you?

SOS: Words of wisdom for your fellow authors.

DB: I try to read as much as possible and try to always study the craft of writing. I think the most important things are reading and writing as often as you can.
