Plot:

When twin sisters Rose and Bel Enright enroll in The Odell School, a prestigious New England boarding school, it seems like the opportunity of a lifetime. But the sisters could not be more different. The school brings out a rivalry between them that few ever knew existed. And the school itself has a dark underbelly: of privileged kids running unchecked and uninhibited; of rituals and traditions that are more sinister than they seem; of wealth and entitlement that can only lead to disaster.

For Sarah Donovan, wife of an ambitious teacher who is determined to rise through the ranks, Odell also seems like the best thing that could happen to their small family. But how well does she really know her husband? What lengths will he go to to achieve his goals? And when one dark night ends in murder, who is guilty, who knows the truth, and who has been in on it all along? SHE WAS THE QUIET ONE. Because murderers are almost never who you expect.

Michele Campbell is a graduate of Harvard College and Stanford Law School and a former federal prosecutor in New York City who specialized in international narcotics and gang cases.  A while back, she said goodbye to her big-city legal career and moved with her husband and two children to an idyllic New England college town a lot like Belle River in IT’S ALWAYS THE HUSBAND.  Since then, she has spent her time teaching criminal and constitutional law and writing novels.  She has had many close female friends, a few frenemies, and only one husband, who – to the best of her knowledge – has never tried to kill her.

Swathi’s Review:

Wow what a plot! I have never been in a residential school so I had never known what actually happens to the kids inside the campus, behind those closed gates. Although, I have heard stories about the awful things the kids do to each other, this one got to my nerves as it’s so real. I dare not admit my kids anywhere near boarding schools, no matter how immensely popular they are!!

I truly appreciate the concept behind the plot – Kids of the generation are in the News all the time. They cheat, lie, betray, tease, and engage themselves in awful dangerous pranks that might even kill others! How cruel have the kids become? It’s terrifying to even think of the pressure these kids experience in the schools. Leave alone the education and the future career, it’s the fellow classmates and seniors that pollute the environment. Poor, poor kids!

Michele Campbell writes an enthralling plot where the characters are despicable, lovable, pitiful and unforgiving. I loved the portrayal of The Odell School campus and it’s deep history.

The tension between the sisters starts right from the first chapter, thereby giving the readers every possible hint to suspect – not one, but both of them. The reader gets introduced to the crime scene, right from the prologue, except the identity of the victim. You get to know the other kids, classmates, and more importantly the teachers in the campus, thereby making everyone of them a possible suspect in the Murder.

It was a quick read for me over the weekend, thanks to Michele’s pacy writing. This dark, spellbinding, deeply engrossing thriller is a must-read for all crime thriller fans.

My sincere thanks to Michele, and HQ for the advanced copy. The finished copy is even more gorgeous and I can’t wait for all of you to read it soon! Until next time. Xoxo
